Gibson's ES-175 model needs little introduction these days. It has become a staple in the jazz world since its introduction in 1949. Offered initially in single-pickup configuration, the 'D' model (D stands for 'double' in this instance) followed shortly thereafter, expanding the tonal versatility that opened up avenues for the jazz box to step into other genres like Western Swing and Blues.
This 1955 ES-175D in its original Sunburst finish delivers unparalleled hollowbody P90 tone, from full and warm neck tones to clear, focused bridge tones. A competent jazz guitar, sure, but it is capable of much more.
The neck carve is right on the money for a mid 50s Gibson. A full C shape with a moderate taper that is a rhythm player's dream, without restricting quickness for single note runs and more complex melody work. The guitar was refretted at some point, and still shows plenty of life. The original Kluson 'no line' tuners are still healthy and functional as well. The wiring harness is original, with undisturbed solder throughout.
Overall condition is Very Good. The finish shows moderate lacquer checking throughout, with some evidence of light overspray on the sides adjacent to the input jack where a small stress repair was made. There's a small fissure through the top coat on the bass side lower bout adjacent to the tailpiece, possibly where the top layer of laminate suffered some stress. It's very tight with no signs of advancement. The pickguard appears to be a replacement, and the neck volume control knob is a later 70s replacement barrel knob. The back of the headstock reveals a factory '2' mark indicating some sort of flaw (typically finish related), but it'd be hard to identify something off about this one.
